Amazing Murals from around the World

November 19, 2009

While art takes many shapes and forms there are artists out there who showcase their talent in a rather large way or in some cases a true to life way in many different forms of drawings. From murals on walls and inside buildings to drawing on ones hand depicting almost life like animals and even pavement or side walk drawings as they are called. Murals have been painted for hundreds of years taking the form in basically 3 different ways.

The most conventional way is in a two dimensional form. These murals located on building from around the world painted by renowned artists from every corner of the globe from the past to the present are usually quite large in nature and beautifies the almost concrete jungle we live in or in the past churches were decorated in different types of murals.

The other two types are perspective anamorphic illusions and Trompe L’oeil murals. Both these types of drawings offer to the eye a three dimensional outlook at what the viewer is looking at.

Anamorphic illusions are created by distorting the drawing in such a way as the viewer has to be at the right angle or unconventional viewing in order to see the illusion properly. This type of drawing gives the viewer a truly unique look at 3d art. Leonardo da Vinci was believed to be the first to experiment with perspective anamorphic drawing when he drew an eye.

Trompe L’oeil, (French for “deceiving the eye”, pronounced “tromp loy”). Illusions are similar to anamorphic but have the ability to give the viewer a realistic picture while standing in a conventional way of viewing it. If you move off to the side with this type of drawing it becomes too distorted to see it properly in its 3d form. The most prolific Painter to use this type was Andrea Pozzo born in Trento Italy in 1642 and died in Vienna in 1709. His famous ceiling painting did in fresco style in the Church of St. Ignazio set the standards for others to follow. Look at both pictures below to view from looking straight up and from distance away from the ceiling. The one on the left clearly shows a distorted painting while the one on the right shows how remarkable this work of art truly is

In upcoming posts we are going to explore some of the past and present artists who have given us this unique look at such a remarkable concept of painting.
