According to Statistics Canada suicide in Canada from 2001-2005 suicides increased from an incredible 3,692 in 2001 to 3,743 by 2005, with the highest increase of deaths during that time in the age range of 40-44 with a increase of 43 people who successfully committed suicide by 2005, with 375 of the 495 in 2005 being male.
The International Association for Suicide Prevention estimates globally 1 million people die by suicide every year, and over and above the staggering 1 million people who succeed, the number significantly increases with failed attempts.
Think about that number for a minute, 1 million people die every year by suicide, that’s a shocking number of people who lived in a debilitating emotional mind, body and soul before they felt leaving the world before their time was their only way to deal with the pain they couldn’t bare any longer.
Now take in how many failed attempts by the minute everyday and the pain and suffering many live with daily, unable to understand why they feel this or feel this is their only alternative.
It’s our business to make a difference, each of us, to reach out on some level to understand why? It’s our business to make a difference to reduce that annual number of deaths and many more attempts so we can start healing the globe then allowing individuals who have much to offer society to believe they are not worthy of help, but we must start within our own communities, and helping can be as easy as understanding the mental health behind a suicidal mind.

Mental health affects everyone from employers looking for productivity from their employees to parents, teachers and caregivers looking after our children and our elderly, and as the baby boomers age so does the rate of suicide in Canada.
In the same statistics from Statistics Canada the next increase in death rates came at the age of 55-59 with an increase of 36 more people taking their lives in 2005 then 2001 and the age range of 65-69 and increase in 34 precious human lives from 2001 to 2005.
This is now 2010 and we as a society nationally and globally have undertaken in the past 3 years and global recession teetering on depression, or a ‘repression’, the statistics will most likely have taken a steep increase in the number of suicides and financially and emotionally worldwide we aren’t out of the deep water yet economically.
Reaching out with a helping hand or recognizing an impending problem before it occurs with a family member, friend or co-worker can make all the difference in the world, but the first step in helping is admitting there’s a problem, and as we can see by these numbers society is faced with a sadden crisis and the only way to make a difference is through educating ourselves on signs of this mental health issue before it’s to late.
No one who is left behind wants to be tortured with the feelings “there were no signs”, unfortunately suicidal thoughts and actions can be as loud as a train and able to stop it before it derails or as subtle and quiet as the changing of the leafs, but there are always signs, we just need to educate ourselves on what those signs are.
It all starts with one community at a time.
