Is this our last Global Warning?

“Over years of reflection, I realized life is our own personal book of challenges. Our responsibilities in life to who we are and how we affect other people for the good and bad; It seems without much thought we choose to forget future consequences, and with only the need for more, our loss of control over families, marriages, and our one day unattainable life of greed, has become an everyday routine. You may only get one chance for survival, or a last chance of warning, and when we tune out and don’t consider the consequences, denial and lack of action is very likely to churn a host of negative occurrences.” from my personal writings.

What do you think as a Canadian, that we are close behind the United States and Australia as being one of the worst offenders of climate change?

What would you say if you knew Canadian’s emit an average of 19.05 tonnes of emissions a year, only a tonne less then the United States?

What would you say if you knew Europe’s emissions have been dropping over the last ten years but Canada’s has been rising?

What would you say to our Prime Minister, after the first few months in office, that he claims Canada cannot meet their 6% reduction of emissions as per the Kyoto Protocol as this is to hard for them to meet, so instead by 2012, the Canadian government will actually have increased it’s emissions by a 35% increase?

I know what I say…

The future of Canadians is looking bleak and truly “It’s OUR Business to Make a Difference“.

It is time to look at what our next generation will be up against and living in, to also educate them to turn our ignorance and overuse of the fossil fuels and waste with environmental destruction we selfishly grew up with and change it for the better.

It’s not to late, but it will be soon as the ozone depletion is almost at the point of becoming irreversible damage and will accelerate even with all our efforts…

A book I’ve recently been reading “Heat-How to Stop the Planet from Burning” by author George Monbiot. He starts every chapter with a quote from the play “The History of the Damnable life and Deserved Death of Doctor John Faustus.”

Since its publication, many of its terms and concepts, such as “Big Brother,” “doublethink” and “Newspeak” have entered the popular vernacular. “

A man who sells his soul to the devil for 24 years for power and treasures of the earth . His signing in blood led his life to all he could want, but after the 24 years were over the locals claim the devil came and took his soul home. He was painfully dragged away by the heartless servants as he screamed and pleaded for mercy, feeling the beginning of his burning, but it was to late.

His use of the metaphor to Faust and to who we are today as a society displays how in many ways we have become a Faustian society and our consequences will come one day, probably sooner then later.

Monbiot details the story of George Faust in Chapter 1, whose death in 1540 or 1541, could very much be directed towards our own selling of our soul and the metaphors that loudly speak out on our daily lives and what we take, and take to much of.

As the devil’s servant warned him sternly of the consequences, Dr Faust didn’t care, he signed in blood, seeing only magical glory throughout his life, he wanted it all.

After reading “The Faustian Pack” it certainly opened my eye’s to realize how our warning for climate change has been given and we are signing our destiny in our own blood everyday to continue to have what we have.

Warming our car’s in winter, vacation travel, our abundance of technology, our wasteful attitudes as a society, to have everything we as a rich country have without thought on the damage to our delicate environment and those we are hurting, as we speak, as their lives are already changing. No regard to the vast damage we’re creating, living our day to day lives as Canadians as we are destroying one day at a time smaller islands we don’t care to think about. We are all guilty but without constant reminder and education especially from our government, those who should set the example and the pace, yet they don’t and so as Canadians we continually forget.

Is it to late? That’s an unfortunate question we are actually getting closer to having an irreversible answer.

Why don’t we hear about the damage to these countries we’re destroying with panic from our governments , and why do some scientists deny climate change is even a reality? Just as recently as this week  hacked documents manipulated data on global warming in hopes to change the attitudes of world leaders as they gather in Copenhagen December 7 – 18, 2009 to re-negotiate a new protocol for reducing emission’s worldwide.

Too many people just don’t want to change so they deny it’s happening, they would rather not think about it as life would be to unbearable to even imagine, changing in a catastrophic way or just taking away most comforts of life those who want to believe that our lives will continue day after day.

In Chapter 2 of Heat the author disproves some experts who have carelessly released reports denying any affects of man made climate change and who are coincidentally the same people who have been funded by the world’s most profitable corporation, with a reporting in autumn 2005 of quarterly earnings exceeding $10 million dollars, the highest corporate earnings on record.

Naming a few , Monbiot exposes the broken link in their claims and their means of continuing the denial that is affecting more people and islands daily then they want to claim responsibility for.

The author also gives a statement that can’t be denied and how we may have to start using our past history to survive our future “The only situation where we might willingly accept a pay cut is when others are doing the same. This is why there was so little economic discontent during the Second World War”. George Orwell also made a similar point in December of 1940 when he was quoted as saying: “The lady in the Rolls-Royce car is more damaging to morale then a fleet of Goering’s bombing planes.”

How can we ignore these clear cut points these two gentlemen make?

Drastic measures are a difficult concept for many to conceive, but if we don’t take notice and heed the warnings then drastic change is what we’ll see.
