What can we say about Remembrance day/Veterans Day? Lest We Forget

During our daily prayers, do we remember to thank soldiers who unselfishly give their time and their life so we can pray?

During our Thanksgiving dinner do we remember to give thanks to the soldiers who unselfishly give their time and their lives so we can eat a hot meal with family and friends?

During our holiday feast do we remember to give thanks to the soldiers who unselfishly give their time and their lives so we have the right to religion?

During our morning commute to work as we stop in the drive thru window to get our hot cup of coffee, do we give thanks to the the soldiers who unselfishly give their time and their lives who in their morning commutes sometimes only drive thru IED’s?

During our summer BBQ’s with friends and family with laughter of our children in the yard and on the street do we raise our glass and thank the soldiers who unselfishly give their time and their lives so we can drink, eat and be merry, breaking bread with those we choose, not those we are told?

Do we ask our children to pray everynight to say thank you for the soldiers past, present who unselfishly give their time and their lives so they can have a future?

We all on some level during these times, caught up in our own life of happiness of our freedoms forget why we do have these wonderful times, today is not one of them. Today as a nation, as a continent we come together to remember why and to honour those who have worn the uniform, who have served, who have fought and who have died. We honour their parents for giving life sometimes losing their child so our children and other children in not so free countries can wake every morning with hope of a new day, and dream of their future.

At 11am do not forget to stop for 2 minutes of silence to honour some of the finest heroes God sends, and at times God taketh away.

The following poem was composed in Dresden Prison in 1941, shortly before he was transferred to Dachau concentration camp, where he died in October, 1942

It is worthwhile to live
and fight courageously
for sacred ideals.

O blow ye evil winds
into my body’s fire
my soul you’ll never unravel.

Even though disappointed a thousand times
or fallen in the fight
and everything would worthless seem,

I have lived amidst eternity –
Be grateful, my soul –
My life was worth living.

He who was pressed from all sides
but remained victorious in spirit
is welcomed into the choir of heroes.

He who overcame the fetters
giving wings to his mind
is entering into the golden age of
the victorious.
